Black Fungus Deadly Than Coronavirus: Who are At High Risk?

HYDERABAD: Amidst spiking coronavirus cases in the second wave across the nation, now one more infection which is threatening people is Black Fungus. Black Fungus which is called Mucormycosis is a fungal infection which generally occurs in people whose immune system is weak. This is more deadly than COVID 19 as the percentage of survival is low in Black fungus when compared with Corona, and the treatment also involves the removal of dead tissues like eyes, mouth jaws and other parts which gets infected with the infection.

Experts say that Black fungus cases are on rise in Telangana and other states of the country and have claimed the lives of several patients. A person with uncontrolled diabetes, AIDS, Corona patients and cancer patients has the highest possibility of acquiring this infection.

When a person is infected with this Black Fungus there are 50 % chances for his survival. This infection is caused by moulds which are present in the natural environment including soil, plants, manure, decaying fruits and vegetables and debris.  This disease has a severe impact on the functionality of lungs and the brain.

Why Is Black Fungus Affecting Corona Patients?

The corona patients immunity system is weakened due to the virus and their blood sugar levels will be fluctuating. If a patient is a diabetic then there are pretty chances that their sugar levels will be very high which reduces the body’s immunity. This causes black fungus to easily attack our body cells. Added to this the steroids given to Corona patients further increases the risk of Black fungus attack.

Control hyperglycemia
Constantly Keep a check on blood glucose level after COVID -19 recovery and also in diabetics condition
Use steroid judiciously
Use clean, sterile water for humidifiers during oxygen therapy
Use antibiotics/antifungals judiciously
